Chapter 2- Freedom

He cut her mane to just even with the bottom of her eyes and left her tail long enough to still swat flies. "That should be good enough." Thomas said as he patted her. The days grew hotter and shorter. Quinton decided that he would let her have a stall hoping to soften her up. She spent her days with the other horses in the pasture. After a few months Quinton posted a sign that whoever could break Wrangler would get $500. For a few months every man in the fort would try and ride her but to no avail. She would either not let them get near her or she would stand like she was going to let them get on and just as they had lifted themselves off the ground she would jump up and run off making them fall flat on there rear.
One day after the last man tired to ride her Thomas was about to take her to her stall when Quinton appeared. "NO, Thomas! I am going to break her today." He glared at her and she glared right back. "But sir she needs a res. Already 10 people have tired to ride her today." Thomas pleaded. He knew how Quinton planned on breaking her and he didn’t like it one bit.
"good she'll be tired and easier to break. Tighten her saddle up." Thomas did as he was told. He checked and sure everything was on properly. He looked at her with sadness in his eyes. She looked at him with fire in hers. There was NO WAY that man was going to ride her. "Thomas leave the corral. I don’t want you to get hurt." With his head hung low Thomas went out the gate and closed it. Even thought he didn’t want to watch he stayed for his friends sake.
Slowly Quinton approached her. "We can do this the hard way or the easy way." He reached for the horn of the saddle and the reins. She quickly side stepped and raced for the gate. "Okay, you want to do this the hard way." He pulled a whip off of his belt. "NO!" cried Thomas.
"Be quite boy. This WILL be broken today." Quinton walked toward her. she started to move and he whipped the air in front of her. She stopped, slowly turned toward home and glared at him. "Now let me mount you or you will actually get it." She stood her ground. He walked to her and she moved with him to keep him in front of her. After a few minutes of circling each other it started to rain. "Stop moving, you stupid beast!"
She just continued to move with him. He whipped her catching her neck. She whinnied in pain. A gash appeared and started to bleed. Thomas started to climb the fence. "NO, you stay there." A few men grabbed him. "She will be broken today." He whipped her again this time catching her leg. She whinnied in pain again.
"Stop it your hurting her!" cried Thomas. He had tears running down his face. She hated to see this and she was NOT letting this man ride her or hurt her again. This time when he let the whip go she caught it in her mouth and yanked. It came free knocking Quinton over. "Don't just stand there rope her!" yelled Quinton. Men scrambled into the corral with ropes. No one had noticed the strange rainbow that had appeared. Something was different about this peticular rainbow. Many men tired to rope her but she was to quick. Quinton grabbed a rope from the man closest to him. He approached her slowly. "You will be mine you damn animal." She set her jaw tight and let him approach. He threw the lasso at her and she caught it in her teeth she yanked with all of her strength. Quinton toppled over his hat flying off at landing on her back. She raised up on her hind legs and let out a loud whinny.
All of a sudden a bright light surrounded her, something was happening. The rope and hat became part of her. The hat on her hop with the lasso around it and the rope curled around her leg. Everyone stared in shock. She turned to Thomas and said "Thank you for treating me so kindly. You are a true friend and I will never forget you." Without knowing why she raced to the rainbow and ran up it.
